Plumbing Services in Australia

Accounting for Plumbers: Plumbing Industry Analysis

Good accounting for plumbers starts with understanding how a plumbing business actually makes money. In the video below, our team summarises IBISWorld’s 2024 report on plumbing services in Australia. It covers industry performance, the link to residential and commercial construction, and the cost pressures contractors face.

Tax and compliance issues for plumbing businesses

Plumbing combines labour-heavy jobs, materials on account and a mix of employees and subcontractors. As a result, a few compliance areas cause most of the problems we see.

  • Taxable payments annual report: plumbing is a building and construction service. Businesses that pay contractors for these services generally need to lodge a TPAR by 28 August each year. A mixed business must lodge if building and construction income is 10% or more of its total business income.
  • Super for subcontractors: a subcontractor paid mainly for their labour can be eligible for super guarantee, even with an ABN. Our article on subbies versus employees explains the risk.
  • Payday Super: from 1 July 2026, contributions must reach the fund within 7 business days of payday. Therefore, payroll and cash flow need to be planned around each pay run.
  • Awards: employed plumbers and apprentices are generally covered by the Plumbing and Fire Sprinklers Award.
  • Job costing: without costing by job, it is hard to see which work is profitable. Quoting then becomes guesswork.

Using benchmarks in accounting for plumbers

The ATO publishes small business benchmarks for plumbing services. These ratios show typical costs against turnover. We use them in two ways. First, they help you test whether your pricing and labour costs are on track. Second, they show where the ATO may look more closely, because results well outside the range can prompt questions.

For construction clients in Queensland, licensing also depends on financial reporting. Our QBCC accounting services cover the minimum financial requirements for licensed contractors.
